In 2021, after five years of growth, there was a decline in overseas shipments of phosphoric acid and polyphosphoric acids, when their volume decreased by -0.4% to 691,000 tonnes. This figure includes volumes traded between EU countries and shipped outside the EU.

In value, exports jumped to $634 million in 2021. This figure includes trade between EU member countries.

Exports by country

Belgium (308,000 tonnes) and the Netherlands (210,000 tonnes) dominate the export structure, together creating 75% of the total volume. Poland (54,000 tonnes) took a 7.8% share of total supplies, which puts it in second position, followed by the Czech Republic (7.5%). The following exporters – Finland (17,000 tons), Germany (14,000 tons) and Spain (13,000 tons) – each recorded a share of 6.3% of the total volume.

By value, the main countries supplying phosphoric acid to the European Union were Belgium ($281 million), the Netherlands ($178 million) and Poland ($51 million), together accounting for 80% total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Germany, Spain and Finland, which together accounted for an additional 15%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +9.1%, has experienced the highest growth rates in export value among major exporting countries over the past decade. Deliveries from the other leaders experienced more modest growth rates.

Export prices by country

The average export price of phosphoric acid and polyphosphoric acids in the European Union stood at $917 per tonne in 2021, jumping 24% from the previous year. There were significant differences in average prices between major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,455 per ton), while Finland ($607 per ton) was among the lowest. From 2011 to 2021, the most notable growth rate in terms of prices was achieved by Germany (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest growth rates.

In 2021, overseas purchases of phosphoric acid and polyphosphoric acids increased by 1.2% to 1.7 million tons, up for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. This figure includes volumes traded between EU countries and shipped outside the EU.

Imports by country

Belgium (378,000 tonnes), Spain (336,000 tonnes), the Netherlands (295,000 tonnes) and France (271,000 tonnes) accounted for around 77% of total imports in 2021. Italy (119,000 tonnes) occupied the next position in the ranking, followed by Germany. (81K tons). All these countries together took nearly 12% share of the total volume. The following importers – Portugal (39,000 tonnes) and Ireland (25,000 tonnes) – each obtained a share of 3.9% of total purchases.

By value, Belgium ($248m), Spain ($210m) and the Netherlands ($208m) appeared to be the countries with the highest import levels in 2021, with a combined share of 57% of total purchases. France, Italy, Germany, Ireland and Portugal are slightly behind, together accounting for an additional 35%.

Ireland, with a CAGR of +3.2%, has experienced the highest growth rate in import value, in terms of top importing countries, over the past decade. The purchases of the other leaders experienced more modest growth rates.

Import prices by country

In 2021, the average import price of phosphoric acid and polyphosphoric acids in the European Union was $703 per tonne, up 30% from the previous year. Prices varied significantly depending on the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Ireland ($1,351 per ton), while Portugal ($613 per ton) was among the lowest. From 2011 to 2021, the most notable growth rate in terms of prices was achieved by Ireland (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest growth rates.
